If you've never been to Davenport Beach, finding it for the first time can be a bit tricky. You can't actually see the beach from the parking lot or from Highway 1, so a lot of people drive right past it without realizing it's there. But once you know where to go, it's straightforward. There are two main access points, and each has its own trade-offs.

The beach is located directly across from the Roadhouse Hotel and the other small businesses in the center of Davenport as you drive through town on Highway 1. It's a tiny town - if you blink, you'll miss it. But the hotel and the cluster of shops are your landmark. From there, two paths lead down to the sand.

Option 1: The Dirt Parking Lot

The dirt parking lot is where most visitors park when heading to Davenport Beach. It's a fairly large unpaved area and the most convenient option, especially on busy days when street parking fills up.

The catch is the path down. From the dirt lot, there's a somewhat steep grade over some rocks to get down to the beach. It's manageable for most people, but it can be a challenge if you have balance issues or aren't wearing sturdy shoes. Flip-flops are not your friend here - you'll want sneakers or hiking shoes at minimum.

Parking Lot Safety Tips

If you park in the dirt lot, take anything valuable with you and put anything that's not valuable into the trunk where it can't be seen. Car break-ins aren't common at Davenport, but they do happen a few times each year. The lot is somewhat isolated and there's less foot traffic than the street parking near the hotel, so don't tempt anyone by leaving bags or electronics visible on the seats.

Option 2: Street Parking Near the Roadhouse Hotel

The second option is to park along the street where the Roadhouse Hotel is located. There's parking available on both sides of the road.

The main disadvantage is that you have to cross Highway 1 to get to the beach. On busy days, this can be a bit nerve-wracking since there's no stoplight or stop sign in town. Cars come through at highway speed. Look both ways, be patient, and cross when there's a clear gap.

The advantages make up for it though. You avoid the steepest part of the rock scramble that the dirt parking lot route requires, and your car is safer from break-ins since there's more pedestrian traffic in this area with the hotel and shops nearby.

Getting Down to the Beach

Regardless of which route you take, be prepared for some rock scrambling to reach the sand. The difficulty changes with the seasons. In winter, when the sand level is low, the rock climb down can be steep and challenging. In summer, when the sand is higher, the descent is much easier. Both of the videos above were shot in summer with high sand, so keep in mind it may look quite different if you visit in the off-season.

If you aren't steady on your feet, you'll likely need help getting down to the beach - especially during winter months. Consider bringing a friend who can offer a hand on the steeper sections.

Quick Summary
